Clairvoyant

1clair·voy·ant

1:  HAVING CLAIRVOYANCE :  ABLE TO SEE BEYOND THE RANGE OF ORDINARY PERCEPTION
2:  OF OR RELATING TO CLAIRVOYANCE <CLAIRVOYANT POWERS> FRENCH, FROM CLAIR CLEAR (FROM LATIN CLARUS) + VOYANT, PRESENT PARTICIPLE OF VOIR TO SEE, FROM LATIN VIDĒRE – MERRIAM-WEBSTER

Sometimes in a reading I am asked to prognosticate, to answer that most elusive question: What’s going to happen? What does the future portend? And I suspect that the reason I am asked to weigh in on events that have yet to unfold is because of a misunderstanding of the word “clairvoyant” as a substitute for/analogue of the word “precognitive.”

Clairvoyant simply means “To see clearly.” Often interchangeable in common parlance, I can see how the two words have become entwined and synonymous. Precognition is defined as “clairvoyance relating to an event or state not yet experienced.” It’s easy to see how this gets mixed up.

Though I often experience precognition in my own life in the form of dreams and deja-vu experiences, I do not employ this form of seeing in my readings. Why? My view is that when a psychic endeavors to read future events for someone else, they are essentially taking on responsibilities that are not theirs to take, and already shifting the course of events. Even worse, they may be instilling the concept of inevitable outcomes in the person they are reading, and that can cause a lot of harm.

The truth of the matter is that the future is unknowable because it is unwritten. It is ours to create. That’s the whole point of life – though time may be an illusion, it’s our illusion and hence it’s the framework we have to work within. Though we may have glimpses across the expanse of time in places where its fabric “bunches,” I know of no one with a reliable bead on future events.

So another question occurred to me: Why do people want to know their future so badly? What are they hoping to gain from that information. It’s sort of like the old science fiction trope, if you knew your future and were able to act on that, it would cease to be what really happens anyway. My view is that the desire to know the future is often born of worry and anxiety, a desperation to control future outcomes as a strategy to mitigate that worry. It is a tactic of the mind and it is meant to fulfill the basic psychophysical need to relax.

This is where I can help in a reading. With a client’s permission, I can help bring their attention back to the present where we are all empowered to create and sustain our lives. We have no power to do anything in future time except leak vital energy into the void, and this only causes more worry and regret. When we do everything we can in present time, then we can let go of future outcomes, knowing that we’re in sync with the creative drive of the universe which has positioned us in the driver’s seat of present time. That’s where the steering wheel, clutch, accelerator and brakes are all available so that we can be in charge of our lives, alive .. and hopefully relaxed.
